Service Area 1
Funding & Growth
Sustainable income is the foundation of every charity's mission. But it is rarely just a question of raising more money. It is a question of building the right model — one that is structured, diversified, and resilient enough to support long-term growth.
Abbey Solutions works with charities, NGOs, and social impact organisations to design and execute funding strategies that are targeted, evidence-led, and deliverable. We focus on secured income, not activity, and on building pipelines that continue to deliver after we leave.
Overview
Funding & Growth is the largest of our five service areas, reflecting both the depth of our experience and the central importance of income to every organisation we support. We cover the full range of charitable income streams — trusts and foundations, major donors, corporate partnerships, legacy and in-memory giving, statutory funding, and lottery sources — and we work at every level from individual high-stakes applications to multi-year strategic income development.
Our role varies depending on what each organisation needs. Sometimes that means embedded fundraising support, working alongside in-house teams during periods of growth or transition. Sometimes it means producing a stand-alone strategy or a single major application. And sometimes it means stepping in as interim leadership while a permanent team is recruited.
Across all of this, we combine deep sector knowledge with advanced research and data-led targeting to prioritise opportunities with the highest probability of success. The aim is to put time and effort behind funders who are genuinely aligned with the organisation's mission and scale, rather than spreading resource thinly across long lists of unlikely prospects.
What we do
Our Funding & Growth work spans the full lifecycle of charitable income development.
-
Trusts and foundations
Strategy, prospect identification, application development, and ongoing pipeline management. Strong existing track record across UK, European, and international funders.
-
Legacy and in-memory giving
Strategy and programme development for organisations introducing or scaling legacy income.
-
Major donor fundraising
Identification, cultivation, and conversion of high-value individual donors, often in conjunction with senior leadership and trustees.
-
Corporate partnerships and sponsorship
Moving beyond transactional giving towards multi-year partnerships that deliver value to both sides.
-
Case for support development
Articulating why an organisation deserves investment, in language that resonates with each funder audience.
-
Funding pipeline design and management
Building structured, prioritised pipelines with defined conversion pathways.
-
Interim and embedded fundraising support
Senior fundraising capability deployed directly into client teams during periods of growth, leadership change, or capacity gap.
Our approach
We take a disciplined and commercial approach to funding. Four principles run through every engagement.
Targeted
We focus effort on funders genuinely aligned with the organisation's mission, scale, and risk profile. Long lists of unlikely prospects produce activity but rarely income. We prefer shorter, sharper pipelines built on evidence.
Structured
Pipelines are designed with clear stages, defined conversion criteria, and visible metrics. Fundraising leaders should be able to see, at any point, where each prospect is and what needs to happen next.
Practical
Our work is built to be implemented immediately. Strategies that sit on shelves are not strategies — they are documents. We design for the team that will deliver, not for the team we wish existed.
Outcome-led
We measure what matters: secured income, donor relationships in development, pipeline value at each stage. Activity is a means, not an end.
Typical outcomes
Organisations we work with typically come away with:
- A strong, prioritised funding pipeline — visible, defensible, and actively managed.
- High-quality grant applications, donor materials, and case-for-support documents that are reusable and adaptable.
- Secured funding across multiple income streams, reducing dependence on any single source.
- Increased visibility with aligned major donors and funders, supported by proper relationship management.
- In-house teams that are stronger and more confident at the end of the engagement than they were at the start.
Who we work with
We work with charities, NGOs, and social impact organisations seeking to grow income, diversify funding, and build long-term financial resilience. Our clients range from established institutions managing eight-figure income to growing organisations developing their first structured fundraising programmes. We work both in the UK and internationally, with significant experience across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.
How this connects to our other service areas
Strategy & Performance
When fundraising strategy needs to flow from a wider organisational strategy, or when fundraising performance issues are symptoms of broader strategic questions.
Research & Market Intelligence
When prospect research, donor identification, or market mapping is needed to inform funding priorities.
Governance, Risk & Due Diligence
When working with new corporate partners, complex major donors, or unfamiliar funding sources requires donor due diligence or donation acceptance review.

A real case study will be featured here once content is finalised. The strongest stories for this pillar combine scale with structure — that is, they show that ASI didn't just raise money, but built a model the client could continue to run after the engagement ended.
