Philanthropy & Donor Advisory

For donors who want their giving to achieve real, measurable impact, the challenge is rarely the willingness to give. It is knowing where to give, how much, to whom, and how to be confident that the funding will be deployed well.

Abbey Solutions provides independent advisory support to philanthropists, foundations, and family offices. We help donors structure their giving, identify and assess funding opportunities, and build relationships with delivery organisations they can trust over the long term. Our role is unbiased, rigorous, and discreet.

Overview

Philanthropy & Donor Advisory bridges the gap between donors and delivery organisations. Many of our clients have the capital, the conviction, and the ambition to make a difference — but lack the structured framework or the on-the-ground knowledge to deploy that capital with confidence. Others have been giving for years and are looking for a more disciplined approach: clearer strategy, better-vetted partners, sharper measurement of impact.

Our work in this area is grounded in two decades of relationships with NGOs, charities, and delivery organisations across the regions we cover. That network — combined with structured assessment processes and on-the-ground insight — means we can identify, verify, and recommend opportunities with confidence. We are not selling our own programmes, and we have no incentive to push particular causes; our role is purely advisory.

Confidentiality is fundamental to this work. The donors and foundations we support are typically operating at significant scale and with reputational considerations of their own. Our work is delivered with the discretion that requires.

What we do

Our advisory support spans the full lifecycle of philanthropic giving.

  • Philanthropic strategy development

Clarifying values, priorities, geographies, and intended impact, and turning these into a workable giving framework.

  • Identification and assessment of funding opportunities

Structured sourcing of NGOs, projects, and initiatives aligned with the donor's priorities.

  • NGO sourcing and verification

Direct relationships with delivery organisations across the regions we cover, supported by structured assessment of credibility, capability, and impact.

  • Portfolio design and diversification

Building giving portfolios across geographies, themes, or stages of organisational development to spread risk and concentrate impact.

  • Ongoing advisory and relationship support

Continuing oversight of grant-making activity, including monitoring, reporting, and adjustments over time.

  • Impact positioning and communication

Articulating the difference giving has made, both for the donor's own purposes and for any external stakeholders involved.

Our approach

Four principles shape how we advise donors.

Independent

We give unbiased recommendations based on evidence. We have no programmes of our own to fund, no quotas to fill, and no commission relationships with delivery partners. The only interest we represent is the donor's.

Rigorous

Recommendations are grounded in structured assessment of organisations, opportunities, and contexts. We use clear methodologies, document our reasoning, and stand behind our advice.

Practical

Donors do not want philosophical reflections; they want clear recommendations with defined next steps. Our outputs are designed to support decisions, not to display analytical depth.

Discreet

We are trusted for high-value and sensitive giving precisely because confidentiality is a default, not an option. Information stays with the people who need it.

Typical outcomes

Donors and foundations we work with typically come away with:

  • A clear philanthropic strategy aligned to values, priorities, and intended legacy.
  • High-quality, vetted funding opportunities, structured into a workable portfolio.
  • Stronger relationships with credible delivery partners, supported by independent assessment.
  • Confidence in funding decisions and deployment, including on more complex or higher-risk opportunities.
  • A sustainable advisory relationship that supports decisions over years, not just one-off engagements.

Who we work with

We work with high-net-worth individuals, family offices, charitable foundations, and grant-making trusts. Some of our clients are first-generation philanthropists structuring giving from the ground up; others are established foundations refining and improving existing programmes. We also support private banks, family office networks, and wealth advisors whose own clients are looking for independent philanthropy advice.

A real case study will be featured here once content is finalised. The strongest stories for this pillar will be those showing the journey from initial intent through to deployment and measurable impact, with the donor’s permission to share or with appropriate anonymisation.
